I want it to behave more like a chat

Kondo Desktop has two modes, chosen under Settings › Preferences. Pick Chat if you want it to feel like a messaging app.

• Chat: the composer is focused as soon as you open a chat, Enter sends and Shift + Enter adds a new line, and you stay in the chat after sending.
• Kondo Classic: hotkeys stay active when you open a chat, ⌘ + Enter sends, and sending moves you on to the next chat.

A mode sets these behaviours together. Open “Show what this mode sets” on the same page to see each one; they can’t be changed one by one.
